My first two books are now available. Writer, photographer, actress, counselor, and helper to my husband's exciting business ventures.BeckyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181670255360575340noreply@blogger.comBlogger450125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130643938140591316.post-3972738755630845862015-03-08T12:00:00.000-05:002015-03-08T12:00:01.353-05:00My Blog Has MovedMy blog has moved!

Since 2007, when I first decided to begin publishing my thoughts to the big world wide web, I've enjoyed using blogspot. But this January I switched over to Wordpress and I created a new site:

www.BeckyEmerick.com

I packed up all of my old posts and moved them with me, only now they're easy to sort and view by category.

To my faithful followers - thanks for reading along.

See you in my new home!
Not quiet, but in bed. My husband left to fill the car with gas. I wanted to sit in my cozy fleece sheets and scroll through Pinterest on my phone.

But I cleaned up the house. It's amazing what 30 minutes will do.

I just didn't want to start Monday behind.

I don't always make that choice. I hate having to be responsible. I think Heaven will be one big pot of creativity, and we'll get to dance in the wind, finger painting the sky.

But until then, I have to learn faithfulness.

35 years and I'm still learning.

And I get frustrated that my children haven't learned it yet.

So I also need to learn gracious patience.

My dishwasher is humming. Pandora is playing. My husband will roll back in the driveway any minute.

Goodnight everyone.

BeckyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181670255360575340noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130643938140591316.post-77163137531648064212014-08-13T12:32:00.000-05:002014-08-13T12:32:20.129-05:00I am the sunflowerAfter an unseasonably long winter followed by a cool summer, I'm beginning to wilt.

Bundled in a long-sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, and jeans, I went to the Indiana State Fair and saw this sad sight:

And I thought, that's a little like me, right now.

Summers of Indiana Past, I remember you.

Hot, 95 degree days. Humidity so thick you can drink it. Feeling the heat burn through your shirt and lighting a fire on your skin. Reading a book in the full afternoon sun while sipping iced tea.

I don't think I've ever complained about the heat. Even when our summer was so hot, our neighborhood pool felt like a hot tub, I didn't complain. I love the heat.

And without it, I'm starting to wither a little bit inside.

Shallow? Maybe.

And yet there are people rejoicing. My husband says this is the best Indiana summer EVER.

I roll my eyes.

And contemplate moving even further south.

Or buying a heat lamp.

You get the idea.

There are plants that thrive in the coolness of the summer. But like tomatoes. And roses. And that poor sunflower. I miss the heat.

Here's a haiku poem about it:

Indy in Summer

Remember 90 degrees

How I long for you

Not physically like my nose or my arm hair. Or the big things, like "never sin again," but just the other stuff. (Not a deep post here, folks.) This is one of the things:

I wish I woke up happy.

I'd love to be able to wake up with a smile, greeting the world with a thankful "hello," excited to be blessed with a new day. My reality is a groan. I usually hear Lee's alarm first. And then I fall back into a dream-filled restless sleep until my alarm goes off. I grumble, hit the snooze button, you get the picture. (I'm always able to lie to myself that I'll pray during my seven minute snooze, and I can't believe I still fall for it.)

I wish this weren't the case, but I don't know how to change it.

And just for fun, here's a picture of my alarm clock I've had since 3rd grade. We've tried other clocks now and then, but they always break. This one is old reliable. Guaranteed to buzz obnoxiously just when I don't want it to.

So there you go. What comes to your mind?BeckyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181670255360575340noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130643938140591316.post-43558211200446013532014-05-15T09:58:00.000-05:002014-05-15T09:58:48.793-05:00How to fix number reversals in 5 minutesMy 8 year old boy still reverses many numbers and letters. From experience with his sisters, I'm pretty sure that learning cursive this fall will help with the letters, but I was at a loss as to how to correct his numbers.

I drew a correct and incorrect 7. He couldn't choose the right one. The same with 5, 3, 2, 6, and 9.

After a little internet reading, we figured it out!

Hold up your right hand (the one with the pencil) and form a C.

This is the shape of the opening to the 2, 3, 5, and 7. Curve it a little and you get the 4 as well. (He caught onto this very quickly.)

For the letter d, I'd already taught him that his donut rolled off the table and hit a wall. (Get out a piece of paper, draw a donut, and expain what happened, drawing the line for the wall.)

So keeping with that wall theme, we pretended that 9 donuts ran up the wall and got stuck up there. (Using the paper, I drew nine lines going up the wall, counting them all out.)

But, the 6th donut rolled up and over to the other side of the wall. (Creating the number 6).

I explained 9 and 6 again, drawing it out again. Then he told me the stories.

I had him write his numbers twice.

He did them all correctly, with a little excited giggling from both of us.

Time will tell if this will stick, but I'm thinking our number reversal problems are fixed!

I hope this helps some of your kiddos!BeckyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181670255360575340noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130643938140591316.post-39889062123991877012014-05-14T14:02:00.000-05:002014-05-14T14:09:24.992-05:004 Book Reviews, 4 Minutes Each... Go!I've recently read 4 books and am going to review them quickly - giving myself only 4 minutes for each book. You will appreciate this time-limit. Trust me. I could go on and on about each of them. Thankfully, I'm a super fast typer, and I'll try to fit a bunch in.

Ready? Go!

Crazy Busy by Kevin DeYoung

Kevin DeYoung starts out light hearted and keeps me laughing through the whole book. He goes at it with an "I'm in this with you" attitude rather than an "I've fixed my problems" plattitude.

He says:

"It's ok to be busy at times. You can't love and serve others without giving of your time. So work hard; work long; work often. Just remember it's not supposed to be about you. Feed people, not your pride."

My biggest take-aways:

1. He explains that many Christians seem to be walking around "with a low-level guilt that comes from not doing enough... so we get used to living in a state of mild disappointment with ourselves." Boy, I can relate.
2. I am not the Christ. I can care about AIDS and Homelessness and Orphans and etc etc but it's not my mission in life to solve every-single-crisis-that-I-read-about-on-Facebook.
3. Even Jesus didn't do all the good He could have done in the world. He didn't heal everyone. He didn't fix everything. (From our earthly perspective.) "He was not driven by the needs of others... the approval of others... but by the Holy Spirit. He was driven by His God-given mission."
4. It's important to have margins in my life, so that when one brick topples a little, the whole tower doesn't collapse. (Meaning, someone can't find their shoes fast enough and I explode. Just saying.)
5. Being too busy is bad for our souls if we don't make time for our relationship with God.
6. Focus point: What am I uniquely gifted to do? Start there.

Whoops, lost track of time. NEXT!

Family Vocation by Gene Edward Veith Jr. and Mary J. Moerbe

This father-daughter team explains Martin Luther's drive to have all people seen as valuable in God's Kingdom by raising the family and parenting roles as critical vocations during a time when the only vocations that mattered were in the church. They indicate that most moms today would find the job of a nun in a monastery to be freeing and easy. Basically, we are all important in God's kingdom.

"Husbands and wives nurture each other. Fathers and mothers nurture their children. And God nurtures everyone through these offices."

The main emphasis was in getting your eyes off of yourself and onto God and others by sacrificing for them. "Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." I John 4:10-11.

They explain, "Though God doesn't need our good works, our neighbor does. Our neighbor is in need. God commands us to love and serve that neighbor."

In recap, the book encouraged me to work hard with hands as unto the Lord, with renewed eyes that every single cup of water given and every snotty nose wiped matters for His Kingdom.

Whew... Number 3.

The Hawk and the Dove Trilogy by Penelope Wilcock

It was interesting to read this immediately after the book about Martin Luther's criticism of the priesthood's elitism. In this Historical Fiction novel, we grow to love the lives of the men in the monastery under the careful eye of their Abbott Peregrine. This is a book that beautifully combines theology and relationships, and I savored every word. What a delightful story. Slow moving, but meaningful. I even underlined some passages I want to go back to and remember. Like when Peregrine argued that God's mercy was greater than His justice.

If you're looking for a delightful and endearing summer read, pick this up. It was on my booklist for our school year's study of the middle ages. I ordinarily wouldn't be drawn to a book about a bunch of men in a monestary. But I'm glad I listened to my brother's advice and read it to the end.

And finally...

7: An experimental mutiny against excess by Jen Hatmaker

Jen does an experiment by limiting herself in specific ways for 7 months. Only eating 7 foods, giving up 7 forms of media. Wearing 7 items of clothing. You get the idea.

The book was so funny. I laughed out loud a lot.

The book was painful. Ouch. Like, "I don't like you now, Jen. You had me laughing, and now we're no longer BFFs."

I'm glad I'd already read Crazy Busy because otherwise Jen's book would cause my "do more" personality to add about fifty more things to my to-do list. I had to repeat to myself often while reading, "I am not the Christ." Which is strange since the goal of the book is to simplify...

I haven't fully processed the book. It's going to sit and simmer a while in my mind. I will probably never garden and I can't seem to rationalize spending more money to buy local food and I can't possibly fathom giving away 75% of our income.... but the ideas were intriguing. Basically, live simply and give more. That I like!

So there you have it. A glimpse into my book world for the last month or so.

But I saw a tutorial on Pinterest HERE that I thought looked doable for the girl who owns a sewing machine but doesn't know how to really use it.
I figured I'd give it a try.

Her blog is pretty amazing. Check out her other tutorials. I just might end up making a bag out of a sweater or something like that. (As long as I don't use anyone's good sweater, of course, like the dog boots....)
BeckyEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181670255360575340noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6130643938140591316.post-42089808490013308462014-04-10T11:53:00.000-05:002014-04-10T11:53:18.397-05:00Homemade Self Tanner: Pinterest FailIt's sunny outside, and as I thought about wearing some capris, I remembered a homemade recipe for a self-tanner I'd pinned on Pinterest. I thought I'd give it a try!

It sounded simple:

2tbs cocoa powder (depending in
how tan you want to be.)

+

Any moisturizer

+

an empty bottle

+

mix it
all together. Good for super light girls.

Here was the original photo:

And I was a chocolatey, sticky mess.

There was no tan. There was just stupidity.

Ok, so that was a fail. Please, don't try this at home, unless you feel like wasting a few good ingredients.

So... in light of the sunshine and "fair maiden" syndrome we have after 6 months indoors in Indiana, do you have any good self-tanner suggestions?

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I felt bad for

My tween daughters needed to add this to their daily routine, and I didn't want to load them on chemicals if I didn't have to. Enter the scene: Coconut Oil.

I ended up making Coconut Oil Facewash for all of us, and we love it! I made another batch last week for a friend.

I can't tell you how much I've loved using this combination for my facewash and moisturizer. I followed most of the instructions here: Camp Wander.

Basically, you add coconut oil, olive oil, and an essential oil (I use Lavender) for the face wash, and then use plain coconut oil for the moisturizer. (I buy mine at Costco).

Here are daily instructions:

Spread cleanser evenly over your face. You may use it as eye
makeup remover too.

Wet a cloth with hot water and hold it against your face.
Rinse and do it again. You are steaming your skin and opening your pores.

Then
use the cloth to wipe off the oil.

Use a smaller amount of the moisturizer and
pat it lightly on your face. (This winter was so dry, I put it on thick!) You can use the moisturizer on your whole body if
you like. The oil absorbs quickly into your skin.

Notes:

Sometimes before I take a shower, I'll put the cleanser on my face and wipe it off while I'm in there.

I just used lavender in the cleanser to keep it
gentle. You can add melrose or tea tree oil if you feel like you need
extra blemish control.

Also, coconut oil hardens above 76 degrees. So just put it on your finger tips, rub them together, and it melts.

The blogger I followed says:

"If
you're prone to break outs, coconut oil is great. It will open up the
pores and release built up toxins that have accumulated from various
skin products, dirt, trapped oil etc. There is a possibility that during
the detox period you could suffer a breakout resulting from the toxins
being pushed up to the surface but it will subside once the pores are
cleansed. Believe it or not, this protocol is excellent for the acne
prone."

I attacked this dinosaur with a drill and a bit, and though the battle was intense, I conquered.
I got the idea from HERE.

I used a diaper wipe container. It had an oval "pop out" area in the center, so it wasn't flat, but I cut that out with an exacto knife and then put the green plates on both the inside and the outside with hot glue. The plates cut easily with a sharp pair of scissors.

He loves it! His big brother is asking for one now. :)
I tried yet another Pinterest item today in my quest to actually do the things I've pinned. (I also did one of the exercise plans, but I don't think I can count it as done until I've done it for at least, well, a week or so.)
Basically, these are a way to keep me accountable, because when teaching the other kids, it's so much easier to just have him on a computer game than doing something more worthwhile. So this keeps both of us accountable!

We made them and used them today, and so far so good. The boys seem into it, so maybe it will last. And, I don't have to say, "Have you cleaned your room?" I can say, "Have you done all of your popsicle sticks?" I think it sounds less naggy. At least for now. :)

What fun ways have you found to keep up with chores and tasks?

PS - I didn't realize that I didn't know how to spell "popsicle" until I tried typing it multiple times.

My first task was Home Made Dog Booties. I followed these steps: INSTRUCTIONS.

They were so simple! Best of all, I used items I had around the house. An old denim placemat, some elastic I saved from thrown away fitted sheets, a pair of leather boots bound for Goodwill, and some velcro off of a costume I was going to toss.

It took a couple of hours due to sewing machine fun, but all in all, they work!

SUGGESTIONS:

Do use stretchy fabric. It's kind of a challenge to get them on. In fact, I think it might take longer to get the shoes on than it takes to wipe the snow off of his feet. (bummer)

Do make one first before cutting out all the fabric so that if it's tight, you'll know. (oops)

DO NOT USE the wrong leather shoes!!!

Yes, this is where it becomes a major FAIL. My daughter and I have similar boots. I used her perfectly fine boot.

Yes, you read that right. Instead of my worn-out boots, I just merrily cut into her nice, real-leather boots we found on clearance this fall, that were a little big so they still fit.

After a dozen apologies and a few tears, I think she's agreed to forgive me.

But not sure if I'll get over it personally. These "inexpensive, resourceful" booties just turned into a pretty pricey pair!

But hey, that's something crossed off my list. I wonder how expensive this Pinterest thing is really going to end up being!

Next: Actually doing a few exercises that I got around to printing out...

What are you working on?
the fun, creative, healthy things I've pinned on Pinterest? (I ask as I
sit at my computer in my sweat pants, pinning work outs and educational
games...)

A friend then told me about a blogger who made it her goal to blog about actually doing things she's pinned.

I thought it was a great idea!

Stick around - this might end up turning into a "Pinterest - FAILS" blog! LOL!

Just to get me motivated, here's a real food item I actually made at Thanksgiving, as inspired by a pin:

Aren't they cute turkeys? I'm going to start by printing out some of those workouts I've pinned.

Want to join me? What are you going to try doing this week?
Free of clutter. Unnecessary commitments. Unhindered service. No junk.

Does this life even exist?

We visited a monastery today with our home school group. Wow, they have a lot going for them! It caused me to pause again and wonder why I do what I do. Why I have what I have.

It's a desire that goes deep. I have websites pinned about simplicity, I've read books about it, I subscribe to blogs about it --

When the reality is that I'm in the middle of a life that's anything but.

Four kids. Educating, feeding, and clothing them. Family. Friends. Hobbies. Ministries.

Life.

It's not simple.

So what can I make simple?

Do I say no to everything non-essential?

Or do I embrace the wild ride, knowing it's only a season?

So many thoughts. What do you think?

Me? I'll have to think later. It's time to make dinner.

Below is a true story of events surrounding Lee's motorcycle accident.

~*~*~*~*~

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> Jay sat in his car, frustrated with the wreck that occurred two car lengths ahead of him. His fuel warning light was blinking red, and he thought, Great, I'm going to run out of gas and be stuck on the highway. He tried to observe the cause of the wreck, but two semi trucks had maneuvered in front of the scene, blocking his view.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> After texting a friend that he might be in need of some help, he heard a different reply.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> "You are a pastor. Go pray."
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> It was a voice that he knew he should listen to. So with cars crammed around, in front, and behind him, he left his vehicle and walked up to the scene.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> It was a motorcycle accident. The body looked gruesome, but he was alive. A military man stood nearby with the injured man's wallet held in a firm grip. The EMTs were on their way.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> And Jay prayed.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> He prayed until the motorcyclist was in the ambulance and traffic began to move. Jay had been on his way to the hospital anyway, so after visiting his friend, he decided to swing by the ER, just in case.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> "Are you his pastor?" the nurse asked.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> "I'm a pastor," he replied, truthfully.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> Then a woman walked in -- the man's wife -- unaware of whether her husband had skinned his knee or lost all his limbs... or worse.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> Jay told the story of what he had seen. They hugged. They prayed. They cried.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> She felt the comfort of God. That her Father sent someone - a roadside prayer warrior - to intercede for her husband when she couldn't be there herself.
We met up with Jay Harvey again yesterday, and Lee was able to officially meet him (while conscience) and thank him. He's the pastor of Pendleton Christian Church, and he used this story among others to talk to his congregation about listening to God's voice. It was a good reminder for myself as well. The nudge to make a phone call. The urge to go help. That feeling that I should pray for someone.

Lee and I are both very thankful that Jay was listening.
"Do you ever feel like God is saying, 'Did you see that?"' -- Lee

Prayer.

I don't completely understand it.

But last year, God powerfully answered a prayer that I forgot I'd even prayed.

In late September, our church joined up with another large church in the area, and together, over a thousand voices worshiped and prayed for our city, especially the first responders.

As a fire fighter, Lee was surrounded and prayed for by the people around us, and he had two requests:

Safety: At work and home.

His Job: The city was talking about letting go of even more fire fighters by the end of the year. Lee would have been one of the positions cut.

ONE WEEK LATER:

Safety: Lee was miraculously rescued from what should have been a fatal motorcycle accident.

His Job: Funds were "found" and Lee's position was secure.

The thing is, with all the chaos around the accident, we forgot. We forgot that we'd prayed. I forgot that I stood next to Lee, holding his hand, surrounded by people who loved us and complete strangers who loved Jesus.

Until a friend sent us this photo from that night:

There we are, being prayed over, a week before the accident.

And God whispers to me through my tears, "Look. Remember. Pray. Trust."

So I humbly bow my head in thanks to the great Creator whose ways are unsearchable and whose love never fails.

I read ahead a bit in the manuscript so I could take a break from listening in order to dump what was in my busy brain, freeing me up to focus on the rest of the message. Here's just a sample of what I wrote in about 2 minutes:

"Feeling overwhelmed. Maybe it's the extra coffee. But I want to reach the world for Jesus. I need to do wheel barrel exercises with Nathan to strengthen his hands. Memorize James. Wake up early to read and write. Read the Gospel Primer with the kids. Attend the missionary prayer services. Go move to a church plant? Sell the house and live in an RV? Use our resources and time and money for others. Counsel more. Spread the gospel. Write another book. Work on my MOPS speech. Motivate my kids to move forward with a purpose. What am I going to do about high school classes? Visit the sick in the hospital. Make meals for people. Gotta get the freezer fixed. Eat clean shakes and food. Exercise."

We laughed about this with my family over lunch. Oh, my random brain! Then my brother reminded me of the story of Jesus and the hungry crowd.

The crowds of thousands surrounded Jesus. They were hungry. They were pressing in. What did Jesus tell his disciples to do?

“You give them something to eat.”

What do you think they probably did? One guy checked his bank account and pessimistically re-ran the budget numbers. Someone I'm sure was asking Siri where the nearest Walmart was. A few probably rolled their eyes or crossed their arms and stormed off. We do know that Andrew started looking around at the resources he currently had. It wasn't much. Just a boy with a small brown bag lunch.

Jesus first asked them to feed the people.

That's so often where I stop. I feel like God has placed the "five thousand" in front of me, be it in the form of responsibilities or the tasks that line my day. Sometimes the pressure of performing is so great it feels like a heavy storm that is rolling in.

"God, I want to serve you! But I can't! I just can't! There's too much!"

I get distracted the by the endless to-do list. Good things. Important things. But sometimes, my eyes are wide and my hands are up and I'm asking, "But how, God?"

But the story doesn't end there.

They go back to Jesus. They ask for His help. He of course has resources that are unlimited. He feeds everyone. And then he asks the disciples to collect the leftovers.

12 baskets.

1 for each of them.

A basket of food to remind them who is the One really supplying their needs.

So I go to Jesus. I say, "My '5000' looks like this. I know I can't do it on my own. I'm weak. So weak. But you can, Jesus. You can. So please, help me. Multiply my time. My creativity. My resources. My strengths. Help me in my failures, my falls. Please, I need you."

"Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted."

So I go to Jesus, give thanks, and then listen to his instructions.

I can't. But He can.
My bare toes, trying to grip it, arms stretched out, wobbling, balancing, whoa! Easy, there! Don't fall!

A tight rope that hovers over the pit of sin. A selfish thought, a rebuke spoken harshly, thoughts of despair - they all send me toppling. I fall to my knees, gripping the cable with all four of my limbs, clinging tightly. In my sinful flesh, I fear I'm always just a moment away from falling head-first into a wasteland of self-centered living. What would make me happy? "I just want to be happy." Or peaceful. Or right. Or liked. Or secure. Or have whatever it is that I want at that very moment.

As I doodled this thought process, it started coming into focus. If life were a tight rope (follow along with me here,) then I have a secure belt around my waist called "Jesus's righteousness." Righteousness is simply: right thinking, feeling, and acting. Jesus was always perfect in all of this. I am not. But my belief in Him affixed this belt permanently around my torso and now, He has me.

Then, there's the tether. A rope, crafted of love and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, that belays me and keeps me from spiraling down. It has threads of the Word of God, Worship Music, Church, Thankfulness, The Promises of God, Other Believers.

And God Himself is holding the other end of the rope.

"The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again." Proverbs 24:16

It's good, I think, for me to realize how weak I am in myself. My heart is only made new by the love of Jesus.
